Many of us will never forget Sam Halron's Chemistry class at Roosevelt. He made Chemistry fun - several of us were inspired to continue in Chemistry.
Two RHS alums have pledged to match contributions up to $6000 to establish a Sam Halron Scholarship fund. So if we get grads to pledge $6000, we'll have $12,000 to begin the fund.
Funds willl be used to help support a Roosevelt HS graduate attend the University of Minnesota majoring in Chemistry or Science.
At this point, we're looking for pledges (donations will eventually be made to the 501(c)(3) Roosevelt High School Foundation) to trigger the matching funds. Simply email andy@rhs-az.com with your name, email and pledge. I'll keep everyone informed about how it's going - and I'll make the pitch at my 60th reunion in September. Bookmark this page so you can tell friends.
Once we hit the match, I'll ask alums to send donations to the RHS Foundation earmarked for the Sam Halron Scholarship
.
Get the word out and let's make this happen!
Merrill W. "Sam" Halron
Born 8 January 1904,
Died 12 December 1994
Graduated from the University of Minnesota and taught in Wisconsin
Married to Dois (1908-2010) in 1931.
Moved to Minneapolis in 1933 and taught Chemistry and Physics at Minneapolis Roosevelt High School. He was also the football coach, winning the Twin Cities Championship in 1935!
I'm not sure when he left Roosevelt, but was there through 1966. Please let me know if it was later. Doris' obituary mentions that football team members visited their home often. Both are buried at Dawn Valley Memorial Park in Bloomington. I cannot find Sam's obituary.
